Silver Lake is a lovely neighbourhood in the heart of Los Angeles. The neighbourhood is situated between the Los Angeles River to the northeast, the Glendale Freeway to the east, the Hollywood Freeway to the south – although the neighbourhood’s shape is a little more complicated than a simple square. The Hollywood Freeway is especially important when navigating Los Angeles, or trying to find Silver Lake, since it is one of the major arteries of the city. Once named Ivanhoe, Silver Lake surrounds a city reservoir. The residential neighbourhood is famous for its many restaurants and colourful inhabitants – it is the perfect place to spend a week-end, with a wide selection of original restaurants where you can brunch, graze a buffet, and people-watch at the same time. The neighbourhood is named after the city reservoir, which was named for a local politician by the name of Herman Silver. Near the reservoir, there is the Silver Lakes Recreation Centre, as well as the Walking Path and the Meadow, all of which are lovely, original places to take the family and children over a week-end. Also in the area, there are the famous ‘Music Box Steps’ where the Laurel and Hardy film ‘The Music Box’ was filmed in 1932. Silver Lake is also famous for its indie rock scene, and many of the local restaurants and bars regularly play host to up-and-coming artists and original new acts. Finding a cheap brunch in Silver Lake might be tricky, but your week-end wouldn’t be complete without a Sunday or Saturday meal with the family at one of the area’s enchanting restaurants.
