The Theatre District is the area of Manhattan where most Broadway theatres can be found. It’s a famous centre of art and culture in the city, and extends from West 40th Street to West 54th Street, stretching between Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue. The Theatre District also includes Times Square, one of America’s most popular tourist destinations. It is, of course, always possible to find good food in the Theatre District, but you might have to spend a bit more time looking than you’re used to – the area is not as well-stocked with restaurants as many others. In addition, the restaurant scene only really fires up shortly before the theatres open, leaving the Theatre District a bit barren when it comes to brunch. All is not lost, however – over week-ends, the area is a popular tourist haunt, and Saturday and Sunday are perfect for taking a stroll with the family and catching a brunch or a buffet. The prices at many of the restaurants are reasonable verging on cheap – theatre actors not being known for being well-supplied with cash. Of course the one absolute must-see in the Theatre District is Times Square. This massive square has become the beating heart of the world’s New Year’s Day celebrations - the millennium celebrations on 31 December 1999 is believed to have attracted more than two million people, spilling over into surrounding streets. On a regular day, the square sees about 360 000 visitors, making it one of the most visited sites on the face of the planet. Times Square is one of the best places in the world to eat, for those who enjoy people-watching, and there are a number of excellent restaurants that are family friendly and cater to children.
